Open world is what keeps me hooked as loading screens for every new lot you want to explore (like The Sims 1, 2, and 4 have) make my computer fans spark out and overheat. Trying to 'objectively' compare them would never work. They both have their downsides and upsides, what matters most is what game you enjoy playing the most at the end of the day. They are two games from two different periods in the series' history, and a lot has changed between those 5 years. Some people with good imagination (storytellers) may be able to play-pretend and enjoy the game despite everything it's lacking, but most of us won't. I feel The Sims 4 fails at this, unless you're a builder or enjoy making Sims. Because in spite of all its flaws, it's a good and entertaining game, which is ultimately what games are for. There's very little they can criticize about the game itself. Most of the time, the only two arguments Sims 3 detractors present are that it looks bad (especially the Sims) and that it runs bad (for them, YMMV). For example, Parenthood adds lots of interactions and the change to shape young Sims' behaviors (allegedly) but all it essentially just adds some boring traits that don't do much (traits don't really do much in this game). Even packs that appear to add "depth" don't really do much. Sure, The Sims 4 USUALLY runs better than The Sims 3 (though simulation lag is very annoying) and CAS and Build Mode are improved (I do miss Create-A-Style), but when it comes to gameplay, there's just nothing there. Every day is the same thing over and over and over again. No burglars, no meteors, no prom dance, no full moon magic, etc. Not to mention the lack of random or interesting things.

Autonomy doesn't really work as it sould (creative Sims won't play any instrument or paint autonomously), and the emotion system is awful (it makes all Sims behave more or less the same).

It all comes down to the lack of personality and uniqueness Sims in 4 have. I can't get attached to Sims in 4 no matter how hard I try. The deal breaker for me isn't even the open world, story progression, etc. I can only play The Sims 4 for 2 hours and then I get bored and I don't touch it for a month. I just spent 6 hours playing The Sims 3 without even realizing.
